Brandy's Musings

Y'all, it's almost October and I am so ready. Granted, my house always looks ready for Halloween. For one thing, we have these dried chicken wishbones hung on the corners of every window. It started as just a place to put them for later wishing, but when we had Bart, he ate a LOT of chicken. The preponderance of wishbones meant we kept using more corner window hooks until every window has at least two, sometimes more. Then we forgot about them. Then it became a rather fun conversation piece. I also have various decorations, like the cat riding a broom, a couple of plush primitive bats, random cast iron crow statues, my box of herbal remedies, decorative skeletons, and the sign over my kitchen that says WITCH PARKING ONLY, ALL OTHERS WILL BE TOAD. Anyway, what I'm saying is, this is the season where all my aesthetic choices begin to make sense. And what with one thing and another, I would love to do some witchy shit about now. Like run naked around a fire at the edge of an ancient forest. You know, normal fall stuff.

Upcoming in Oct:

If you love the season too, and I am sure many of you do! Then we have some great stuff upcoming. THREE shows--two regular book shows and a VIP Halloween party (plus 2-3 podcasts that will be going up, too!) Not only that, but October is the month when I finalize authors for next season. Thank you, VIPs, for recommending people! I try to get as many of them as I can! I will announce that soon, as well as the goodies for signing on as a Season Eight VIP.

Show #1: WARHEAD

Why did France lose to the Nazis, despite its defenders having more tanks, troops, and guns? How did we bring peace to Germany after World War Two? How do you know if you can trust an ally? How can we make clearer decisions under pressure?

In Warhead, Nicholas Wright takes us on a fascinating journey through the brain to show us how it shapes our behaviour in conflict and war. Drawing on his work as a neuroscientist, and over a decade advising the Pentagon and the UK Government, Wright reveals that, whether we like it or not, the brain is wired for conflict – in the office or on the battlefield.

With a unique framework that helps explain today’s rising tensions and how to defuse them, Warhead brings cutting-edge research to life through battle stories from history. What was it like for a foot soldier at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, or in China's Red Army as it fought to survive and triumph throughout the 1930s and 40s? How could leaders such as World War Two tank commanders, Shaka Zulu, or Winston Churchill see through the fog of conflict, make better decisions, and communicate with those who must carry those decisions out? How will human conflict shape our future technologies?

In an increasingly dangerous world that threatens our values and success, Warhead is an essential read to understand why we fight, lose and win wars. Because self-knowledge is power. LINK BELOW:

Show #2: PARTIALLY DEVOURED

Daniel is an alum! And PULITZER PRIZE–WINNING AUTHOR OF ANGEL DOWN! He is joining us again for a Halloween treat:

The New York Times bestselling author of Whalefall and Angel Down dives into a horror movie classic to examine his favorite film’s importance to our history, culture, and psychology—a perfect blend of research and memoir for fans of the movie, the genre, and beyond

Daniel Kraus first saw George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead when he was five years old. Through watching it approximately three hundred times since, Kraus discovered the many ways the film is tied to his childhood trauma and how its influence has carried into his adulthood. He couldn’t help but wonder: Are there other admirers of the film out there who feel the same?

Partially Devoured uses a frame-by-frame deep dive into Night of the Living Dead to produce a kaleidoscopic cultural investigation of the film’s importance and to examine the author’s early life of rural isolation and local violence.

Careening from film analysis to rabbit-hole tangents, Partially Devoured will take readers from screaming laughter to the depths of grief, all while illustrating how a beloved genre film has woven itself into so many facets of our lives.
